Common Sense

You are here: Home » Common Sense Nico, Daddy and Christopher enjoying a summer/spring day June 25, 2015 I’m in the prime of my life. I’m supposed to be smarter and wiser and improve with age. What do they say, “aging like fine wine”? Sure, I’m still stuck in the ways that I have grown accustomed to when I was a child. My parents instilled my values like I would hard wire a stereo system in my car as a child. Those values morphed into my beliefs, which I learned from trial and error and common sense. Common sense is really all one needs, though, isn’t it? I mean, we don’t rob banks. That’s common sense because we should know that robbing a bank will lead to jail, and jail, from what we see in the movies, is a horrible place. I should realize eating this donut is terrible for me. For crying out loud, it’s dough made in a bowl of flour, fried in oil, and sprinkled or stuffed with artificial sweets. Common sense tells me to avoid it, but the other common sense tells me not ...

Fun in a Box

You are here: Home » Fun in a Box                                     Christopher doing his best to squeeze in to one of the many pool boxes. June 10, 2015 All good things come in a box. I guess, except for a car. A new car would be great. But who places a brand-new car in a box? Many pleasures can come in a box. Condoms, for instance. An ice cream cake and desserts in general. Holidays come in a box. Pick a major holiday and think of all the fun you've had out of a box. Food! Except for the box, it's all edible and delicious Chinese food, pizza, and cookies. And Cats, who don't feel all warm inside when their cat curls up in a shoe box! You get the hint that I'm big on everything in a box, except a wooden box, made for your burial, if you elected to meet a gunslinger in the middle of the street in the old American West. I can think of so many other things, but who would have thought...

Parenting Skills

You are here: Home » Parenting Skills May 19, 2015 I sat my defiant son in the office writer's chair I sit in to write my blog and the thousands of words for a memoir. He had his little arms folded across his body. His eyes slanted to the left, and he let out a loud, "Humph!" Nico is now seven, the sweetest, kindest, and most considerate child, but when did this attitude happen? I really need to hone my parenting skills to curb this attitude. But is this unavoidable? His personality is developing. But this was going to be a moment that I would test myself as I searched for the right words to say to instill confidence and power as a part of his developing self rather than tear him down. I love both my sons' age now because at the ages of 5 and 7, both my kids want to be just like me. So I have both of their attention. This is when I can build Christopher, especially Nico's, positive attitude. Eventually, Nico and Christopher will hit puberty and won't ...

One-Hundred Percent of the Time

You are here: Home » One-Hundred Percent of the Time Christopher embracing Champ our yellow lab  April 22, 2015 I’m %99.99 percent sure, that I’m %100.00 accurate that no one has visited Mimie’s grave since she was buried on March 23, 2012. Damn that makes me feel sad that people just don’t care. I don’t get it? I can understand why people don’t visit my daughters, Sophia and Gabriella. That was more of a personal loss for Mimie and I. I suppose if Mimie was buried back home in Colorado by her family they would be there more often but I didn’t bury her there because I knew that Mimie wanted to be buried near her daughters. Besides her boys are living with me in Florida and I’m sure they will want time with their mom more often as they get older and better understand her loss. I suppose it’s easy for me to say that I want our family, and hers, to go by there more often since I do it all the time. I go see her and them a lot. I place out flowers every other Sun...

Like Fine Wine

You are here: Home » Like Fine Wine Nico enjoying a Starbucks chocolate milk April 16, 2015 *2 curse words I’m tired of anticipating getting older, year after year. Fuck it, I’m getting older and that’s just a part of life.   However, I can’t convince myself enough on a daily bases, that I will be that confident in myself and aging, because with every new birthday, comes another year, that everyone I know and love is getting older, and frankly, for me, my aging is a big deal. When I say I’m “tired of anticipating getting older” It isn’t as if this thought has been going on for years. No! I’ve just recently had these intrusive thoughts burrow into my head like termites.   And, as my continued, over thinking, ravages my brain, those thoughts cause me to investigate further into the meaning of life and question why I’m here and if my contribution to this world is helping others that I meet along my journey. Are we a product of evolution? Science makes s...

Water Bottles and Squirt Guns

You are here: Home » Water Bottles Make Good Squirt Guns Too Christopher sleeping in the boat cabin April 1st, 2015 I opened the colorful, Frozen movie-themed gift bag to find candy and a toy water gun. I sat back in my chair and stared at the water gun. It was a hard plastic, see-through, orange casing. The trigger was black, and a bright green drain plug was on the side where I could add water.  There was no way on earth to mistake it for a real gun, but I still paused and thought, “Do I want my son to have this water gun?” My son, who didn’t hesitate, placed a finger on the side of the bag, ripping open the paper bag. The candy and play water gun spilled like a torn open piƱata. He happily bent over and picked up a Blow-pop, lollipop, and the water gun. He properly grabbed the toy water gun handle and pointed the muzzle towards the ground. As if he was going to shoot water on the candy. I thought to myself, “I’m a cop, and I never showed him how to hold a real gu...
