Genuine

June 15, 2016

Genuine is the word I can use that describes my kids, Christopher and Nico. Of course most 6-year- old and 8 year-old kids have genuinely honest opinions. But I’m combining their age so at the total age of 14-years old, they are wise about how they view the world.

“Daddy, did they die?” My 6- year-old asked me.

He was referring to the news about the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.  He saw the breaking news story while walking inside my bedroom. He heard the police sirens emanating from the television and wanted to see why the police cars were in my room.

“Yes buddy, lots of human destruction going on,” I told him as I hurriedly changed the station.

“Why did you change the station? I want to see.”

“Because Christopher you’re too young to understand adult problems. Enjoying being  a kid before that becomes harder too.”

“But I understand death. Elsa’s parents died on a ship!”

“That is a movie. Frozen is not real.”

“But people die. Don’t they?”

“Yes, we all do at some point.”

“But that bad guy, he helped them die?”

“That man did a very bad thing and hurt many people besides the ones who died that night.”

“Did those people want to die?” He asked.

“No son, they were out celebrating life with music and friends. They didn’t want to die.”

“I don’t want to die either. I want to live, daddy. Is the bad man going to kill us?” he said.

“It happened in Walt Disney World,” Nico, my 8-year-old son said. He walked in the room holding my iPhone playing Angry Birds. He never looked away while addressing us.

“Why would anyone want to kill someone at the happiest place on earth?” Christopher said frightened.

“It didn’t happen in Walt Disney World,” I said. “Nico, cut that out and stop scaring him. And no he isn’t going to kill us.”

“Is Mickey Mouse dead too?” Christopher said in disbelief.

“I think so,” Nico said.

“Mickey isn’t dead. The bad thing happened in Orlando not Disney. Stop it, Nico”

“But this can happen in Disney, dad,” Nico said.

“Guys, bad things happen and they can happen anywhere because we have what you call, free will. Meaning you can decide on your own what actions you will commit. There is no one on earth that can stop free will because no one can predict the future of a free thinking society.”

“Free will isn’t only responsible for bad people doing bad things, dad,” Nico said. “Look at Star Wars the Force Awakens. The Storm Troopers did what Kylo Ren told them to do.”

“Yes. However it was a freethinking Storm Trooper, Finn, who led a revolt and sought out the truth of what was occurring. So free will isn’t all that bad.”

“I have an idea, dad. If we all used our free thought and worked together maybe we can solve our problems,” Christopher said.

“That way we can fix everyone and live happily,” Nico told me.

“Those were some genuine thoughts guys. Maybe one day we will use free will to be good to one and other. Hopefully we can all be free from fear of people we encounter everyday.”

"I'm not afraid, dad. I love everyone," Christopher said.

Good to be innocent- I thought to myself.

My advice to my sons?

Be genuinely happy. Be genuine to one and other. Be genuine in loving and be genuine to the human race.

My heart goes out to all those who died in Orlando, Florida on Sunday June 12, 2016. I wish I had better words of wisdom. I just thoughts from the minds of a 6 and 8 year old. Lets us be good to one and other so that we can live in a world of love not hate.  We all want and We all deserve to feel safe in this world.
