It's Not an iPhone

It was my birthday. Gift buying is pretty simple for me. If it has fancy moving lights or a tool that unfastens bolts, I’ll like it. But on this birthday Mimie introduced me to the world of Apple. The closest I ever got to an Apple was an Apple 2 in 4th grade in the 1980's! I had heard of this new phenomenon called the iPhone through news reports. And really, I kind of scoffed when I saw people standing on line for one. But I have to admit, I thought it looked kind of cool. I even mentioned to Mimie that it would be nice to own one myself.

The moment arrived to open my gifts and I was handed a pretty wrapped box. I had to grip the bulky thing with a wide grip, but it was definitely something small enough to assume its practical use was hand held.

"Hand tool? It's a hand tool isn't it?" I said.

"Just open!" she said unable to hold her excitement.

The wrapping paper was a shiny white with little words that read “Happy Birthday" emblazoned on various areas of its landscape. It was going  to be a shame to tear this sucker open but that was my intention regardless of the love it took to encase my gift.

“What a nice box,” I said. My eyes opened wide. My curiosity killing me since I truly had no clue on what it was.

"It's something for work. Something small."

“Babe, you can forgo the formalities and open it,” Mimie said with as much as excitement as me.

I stopped hesitating and dove my hands right into tearing open the paper that was hiding my potential joy.

I stated at the end, forcing my finger into the neatly cornered piece. With one long pull, like scratching a flat surface I tore open one side of the box exposing a dark colored box. What could it be- I thought

Like a surgeon that flunked out of medical school I proceeded to tear the reast of the box open without prejudice exposing a small label at the lef bottom of the package.

The iconic Apple.

“Oh my god!” I exclaimed, “The iPhone! You got me the iPhone.” I leaped to my feet.

My excitement over taking everything else and I began to sing, “I got the iPhone! I got the iPhone!”

My body swayed to my own tunes as I admired the box. I couldn’t believe that in my hands I was holding the very first iPhone ever produced. It was pure ecstasy.

“I read people stood in line for hours for this gizmo. When did you do that? How did you find the time” my smile beaming.

“Well, ummm you see.” Mimie said, her excitement suppressed. She was deliberately withholding her comments, but at the time I didn’t recognize her shyness.

She inhaled deeply and began to speak, “It isn’t exactly an iPhone” she said dismayed about the reality.

“No?” I asked perplexed but my mood not dampended. I was still so excited and not fully grasping what she was admitting to me.

“What is it?” I looked directly at her, just beaming. My eyes full of joy. I was fixated on her every word. I just wanted to hug her.

“Well, it’s the iTouch,” she said.

“The iTouch?” I asked. Not fully understanding what an iTouch was. But it still didn’t sway me. I was smiling so bright.

“Yes. See,” pointing to the box, “iTouch. It does everything that the iPhone does only it isn’t the iPhone. It can't make calls" She pointed at the words again, "It’s the iTouch."

“Oh, it's a fancy iPod?” my voice traling off and my smile becoming less prominate.

“Very cool. Very nice. I love it."

“No, you hate it, don’t you? You wanted the iPhone, didn’t you?"

“Of course not. This is awesome. Its an Apple. I love it.” I said proudly.

“We can go get the iPhone.”

“Sure, ok,” I said smiling.

We then immediately went to the Apple store. I held the box in my hand all the way to the mall. I kept reassuring her that we could just keep the iTouch, but she was determined to get me the gift I wanted.

This story makes me smile to think about it now. It was a great gift and she knew it. And I'm sure somewhere, Mimie is smiling just as wide as I am now, when she remembers how she got me to purchase her an iPhone too.

And walked out of the store celebrating our new toys. Happy birthday to us!
