Waves pound on the land, which lines the edge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. The fingers of the sea slowly pull back the beach sand that rightfully belongs to the living sea. The erosion causes mass hysteria because it erodes the platform of which people work, live and play. This causes cities and counties to come together to rebuild the beach so that people can come back to its edge and marvel at the beautiful Florida sunrises, midnight beach walks, and to play in the water that quenches the soul.

If you haven’t seen the beach I’ll try to take you there. Take your first steps on to the beach sand. As your feet leave the hard surface of the man made ground allow your first foot sink into the soft sand. The sand overwhelms your foot and like an hour glass the sand falls in between your toes while your heel digs in and displaces the sand until your foot firmly settles into place. It isn’t easy walking in sand. The thickness can wear you out. But the reward of making it to the edge of the ocean makes it worth it.

The seagulls caw, the ocean roars, the white caps of the waves roll onto the beach until the momentum slows down and like a ball it rolls back into the sea ready to go back again. The feeling of the water rolling on the base of your ankles is invigorating. The smell of the ocean is intoxicating. It is a moment in time when you can appreciate you’re alive and wonder aloud why we exist.

My emotions pound on my soul like those powerful waves of the mighty sea that constantly hit the eastern shores. I hate getting too emotional but much like those waves tearing into the sand, my mind, doesn’t know it’s own strength. I’m sent into a tizzy. The erosion reminds me how I can lose parts of myself if I fail to rebuild when the waves of tragedy pound on me.

Life throws good and bad things at us, like wave after wave we have to roll with it. And those throws can land blows on our own psyche. Make no mistake about it, those waves that land body blows will cause you to drown in your own misery. We aren’t so lucky to have a lifeguard standing by to help so we have to learn to let the undertow lead you out to sea. Then once it lets go, swim parallel to the seashore and ride the waves back into safety.

It is so easy to erode with the beach sand and recede back with the sea into the very place where our life began. But get your head above water and swim damn it. Claw your way back to the sand. Crawl through the sand until you can stand on your own two feet again. The lesson of survival that you learned, you can pass on to others. I will surely pass it on to Nico and Christopher because as their current lifeguard I may not be there to save them. They have to save themselves. Rally and rebuild the sand in which life has eroded from you. Wave after wave, God will giveth and taketh away.

Stand strong in the soft sand and marvel at what you have as you stand on the brink of the ocean and be prepared for the next wave to alter your life.
