Tell Me Why

You are here: Home » Tell Me Why The boys, Christopher (left) and Nico at an Archery lesson during the summer vacation at Unicoi State Park ,June 12. 2017 (10:51 AM)  June 20, 2017 No parent should ever give in to the demands of a 7-year-old. But my 7-year-old has been so demanding about having his questions answered, as I recently found out on a 13-hour road trip to Northern Georgia, that I couldn't avoid his inquisition and ignore answering anything that crossed his mind. Christopher pushes me for information about anything that pops into his mind. I cannot answer all of his questions in a timely fashion while he rapidly fires them at me like hellfire missiles, and he becomes frustrated. "Tell me, Dad. Why aren't you telling me? Tell me now, why, why!" Today, he knows he has me captive. At the same time, I drove our rented 2017 Nissan Rouge towards the mountains of Georgia, leaving the flat land of Southern Florida behind us. When you live in a beach en...

Don't Look Back You Can Never Look Back.

You are here: Home » Don't Look Back Nico (left) and Christopher having ballon animals made table side at dinner. Can you tell what they are? (June 21, 2017) June 21, 2017 “A little voice inside my head said: Don’t look back. You can never look back” –                                                                                               Don Henley, Boys of Summer I'm better off when I don't look back at some of the bad things in my life. What good can come from looking back on horrific moments that brought the worst in me? The moments that make me most sad? Especially when I have proven that I can survive and have gained character and perseverance. So I learned: move on, right? This advice is easier said than done, but when I ...

Another Day. Another Dollar, a police story

You are here: Home » Another Day. Another Dollar, a police story Us in the Barnstomer in the Magic Kingdom. May 30, 2017. A ride Christopher shut down years ago.  June 9, 2017 The abandoned house sits on a decaying street that has seen better days before it became riddled with crime. Kids no longer ride their bikes up and down the street because it is too dangerous to play. People don't greet their neighbors because they are too scarce, and few are in between. The block isn't slowly dying. It's been dead and ignored for years. Inside the partially boarded-up house, there is a woman. She lies on the floor of a roach-infested domicile while she recovers from her last hit of heroin. She used to be someone's loved one but now is part of the forgotten few who roam the streets like zombies. You don't need a brain disease to be amongst the walking dead. You just need a quality syringe and liquid food to feed your drug-addicted appetite. Two men wade through t...

Pitter Patter of Little Feet

You are here: Home » Pitter Patter of Little Feet Nico and Christopher at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. May 6, 2017 May 24, 2017 My hearing of the pitter-patter of little feet up and down the hallway of my wood-looking ceramic tile house has officially passed. My little boys' are aging so rapidly that their little feet are getting huge! They are so big, in fact, that I can't keep up with their shoe size. "Is it size 1 or 2? Do they need a 2 ½? Ugh." This is my thought process at the clothing store. Their naturally proportionate weight is pressing on their feet as their growth skyrockets from the ground up for all the world to see! The slight sound that used to pound while they ran now sounds like a jackhammer on any mid-town New York street. Back and forth, back and forth. It makes me want to open a window and yell to the construction worker below, "Hey, you gonna be slamming that hammer on the ground all day! People want to sleep!" ...

I Said Goodbye to My Best Friend Today

You are here: Home » I Said Goodbye to My Best Friend Today Nico rides Champ while Christopher watches. 2011 May 4, 2017 My dog, my pal, and the link to my past was my living history. He was around when my wife was pregnant with twins, and he shared their death with me in 2006. However, he stood firm when we brought my sons, Nico and Christopher, home. He became their protector, an overseer for their welfare. He was later called again by his friend to bring me comfort when my wife died 6 years later. But now this good ole boy is dying himself. He is at home resting in a hospice that I created for him. Palliative care is not my specialty, but I'm feeding him snacks I wouldn't otherwise give him. I'm holding him longer. And I still marvel at your big brown eyes that are as large as any horse. No wonder you ate like one. I want to talk to him, and I do, but I wish he could respond back. I would tell my boy how important he was to me in my recovery after my wife ...

Wave after Wave

You are here: Home » Wave after Wave Chirstopher (left) and Nico feeling fresh after haircuts, April 21, 2017. April 27, 2017 Waves pound on the land, which lines the edge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. The fingers of the sea slowly pull back the beach sand that rightfully belongs to the living sea. The erosion causes mass hysteria because it erodes the platform of which people work, live and play. This causes cities and counties to come together to rebuild the beach so that people can come back to its edge and marvel at the beautiful Florida sunrises, midnight beach walks, and to play in the water that quenches the soul. If you haven’t seen the beach I’ll try to take you there. Take your first steps on to the beach sand. As your feet leave the hard surface of the man made ground allow your first foot sink into the soft sand. The sand overwhelms your foot and like an hour glass the sand falls in between your toes while your heel digs in and displaces the sand until you...
