Tick Tock

Forget about the hours and minutes. We live our lives in the second of a 24 hour period.  Think about it. Had you been one second earlier that car would have t-boned you. One minute later you would have been stuck in an awful traffic jam. That is why we must live every second.

For me time seems to be picking up steam.  I’m so far away from being 20 that I feel as if I missed something along my path towards 40. Ironically I can remember 20 as if it happened yesterday.  Only I’m not the same person I was when I was 20.  Whether it’s my aging body that I notice or recent health scares that seem to arise out of the depths of my mind. I know now that I am so far removed from that youthful age that I should begin to enjoy the little things in life.  After all, it is those little things that will make my life worthwhile.

“Dad, I can’t wait until I grow up!” Christopher said to me.

“No son, the quicker you get older the quicker I will age and die.”

(Silence)

Harsh I know. But there was joke in there somewhere with that comment I swear. But honestly, I was just facing my own reality. Memo to time: SLOW THE HELL DOWN!

That is why I find my time in the seconds life has given to me. For me there isn’t a second to spare in my desire to have fun. With the seconds I have chosen to abide by I have decided to go somewhere fun. Do something interesting. Eat something amazing. Do something extraordinary. And yes, find sometime to sleep.

Tick, tick, tick….

In the tale of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, found himself at the mercy of saltwater crocodile named, Tick Tock. Tick Tock had swallowed a clock and the sound of the clock ticking was an indication to Hook that his own time, was nearing an end. But good ole Captain Hook would run for his life before Tick Tock could eat him.  Eventually, Captain Hook’s time wore out. And Tick Tock, the crocodile, finally got his revenge. Doesn't time seem to always win?

The moral to the story was that we all desire to be a kid again and live in the world of Peter Pan. Captain Hook hated the idea of Peter Pan never growing up. He wanted so desperately to be Peter Pan.  He didn't want the responsibility he had to his crew and the boat payment he owed the bank. Could anyone blame him? Who the hell wants to grow up and take on responsibility? Especially when us adults figure out how this world really works, by having to pay bills. But we should heed the awful lesson Captain Hook finally learned: We should preserve the time we have now, and be selfish enough, to enjoy our current youth.  Live a life knowing that time will finally catch up to us, so live your life, in the seconds, of the hours, until your very last breath. Rather then wasting time chasing someone else's life.

For my boys. Enjoy every second of your youth, so that I may enjoy every moment of your life while being grateful for the youth I do have. And to my readers. You should abide by the same thinking. Tick Tock, the crocodile, and the clock, is chasing you.
