Secrets of the Cemetery, part II A short story

You are here: Home » Secrets of the Cemetery, part II, a horror short story Christopher at a young age sleeping on Captain Imperfecto  To catch up first read Secrets of the Cemetery, part I here April 21, 2014 “Every plot you see within these eight foot white walls of the burial grounds has someone buried with a story that lies beneath it. There is something about this soil that allows the dead who have stayed behind to continue to live a life from their soul. I haven’t figured it out yet. That is why I didn’t go over to the other side when my chance came at my death. I had to know why.” “So there is an other side,” Tom asked. “Yes. It truly is a paradise, well when I viewed it from afar. The serendipity entices all who die to enter. “Everyone?” Tom said with a little sarcasm in his voice, “Even if you are bread with evil your entire life. What ever happened to hell? You know for those who have sinned here on earth.” “I’ve heard from the souls that hav...

Secrets of the Cemetery part I, a short story

You are here: Home » Secrets of the Cemetery, part I, a short story Bottom: Nico Top: Christopher in a photo shoot 2014 April 9, 2014 The house was built in the middle of the cemetery. A lone caretaker once lived there to maintain the vast cemetery grounds. The home's outward appearance seemed simple. It is less grand than some of the mausoleums throughout the cemetery grounds. The expansive marble walls towered above the below-ground graves, giving the wealthy people who occupied them a bigger-than-life feature. It's as if they still wanted to show the living they were once kings and queens. What does it matter now? It's better to be alive than dead. Elmer, the caretaker of the cemetery and resident of the house, had died years ago and was buried just outside the very door that he once used daily. Now, a new young funeral director has taken over and has decided to live there so he can save a little bit of money and pay off his massive student loans. The co...

In this Moment

You are here: Home » In this Moment Front: Christopher Top: Nico in a photo shoot Nov 2013 April 2, 2014 I'm at a gas pump, pumping gas into my minivan. I became distracted by the wind as it rushed between the cars. The breeze glided across my face as if reaching out to grab my attention. I look beyond the fuel pumps, rapidly climbing numbers as they tick off into the twenty-dollar range and climb toward the 50s. Some major oil company's liquid gold was dumped into my thirsty fuel tank. I follow the breeze's direction and give the area attention from which it came. I have become mesmerized by life; it's so beautiful outside right now. The sky is pale blue with touches of scarring, thin cirrus clouds scattered about the vast celestial sphere. The green trees are highlighted off god's canvas. At this moment, my life is refreshed. I can feel the thump of the bass from the music playing next to me from a car's open window, but I do not mind w...

Pressing Reset

You are here: Home » Pressing Reset Left to right: Nico, Captain Imperfecto and Christopher in a January 2014 photo shoot March 12, 2014 How do humans preserver? I’m at a point in my life where I’m wondering, “how did I get to this point.” Where’s my reset button? The past two years have gone so fast but yet things still seem the same. I’ve began to move forward putting my kids ahead of my needs but sometimes it’s as if I’m trying to catch up to them. My world is in an ever state of slow motion. My boys are so resilient. The void of their mom is still there. I can’t fill it. And at times they humble me or make me cry when they ask for “mama” or see a woman who resembles their mom and say “mama.” I try to take solace when I find that distressing to me and be grateful, that at four and six years old, they still remember their mom. One of the things that I found out through the past two years is that if you don’t move or try to get over your loss people bec...

Disney for his Birthday

You are here: Home » Disney for his Birthday Nico at The Caribbean Walt Disney Resort  March 5, 2014 It was Nico’s sixth birthday and I wanted to throw him a birthday party but I thought that the money I would spend to throw a party could be better spent at something he likes to do, like going to Walt Disney World rather than having a four hour party where other parents “ohh and ahh” their own kids accomplishments. “Look at little Bobby, he can tie his own shoe.”   :He was feeding that lace up his nose earlier” – I’d more than likely think to myself. So I’d rather enjoy Disney. We have annual passes. Those passes use to be so expensive and would require payment in one lump sum. But now Disney World allows the payment to be broken up over twelve months. It’s a lot easier that way for parents on a budget. I try to go for the full experience with the boys so we stay on an onsite resort. I think the experience is more for me. I still haven’t gotten the...

Goodbye Sleep How I will Miss Thee

You are here: Home » Goodbye Sleep Left to right: Christopher and Nico rest on our way to a boating island  February 18, 2014 If you are having a child, you've already heard about it. "Say goodbye to sleep." At least, I heard that statement all the time when we were expecting our first child. I didn't understand the big deal about this nonsense of no sleep. Have a kid. The kid sleeps for hours. Take turns with your significant other caring for the baby while the other sleeps. Go to grandparents, pass off kids, and sleep for those available hours. How can that statement ring true? Boy, was I wrong! Bye, sleep, how I miss thee. I miss your sleepy days. I need you to sleep. I now see why teenagers just want to sleep. They're saving their sleep credit so that sleep will be out of their system when they produce kids. The lack of sleep is even worse now that I'm a widowed dad. I just don't get any more Z's that I had after the boys were born. The...
